Surviving Cancer with Proper Nutrition

Being diagnosed with cancer is life changing. Most people are terrified; they don't know what to do or where to turn and they are full of questions. For example, people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer often wonder why. Was there something that you did that caused or contributed to this development? More importantly, what can be done to help you in your fight against cancer? Cancer is a difficult disease, but proper nutrition can help greatly in your fight whether you have recently been diagnosed, are going through treatment, or are in remission. Healthy eating contributes not only to your mood and feeling of wellbeing, but proper nutrition can help support your body and immune system during this fight.

Eating Healthy After Diagnosis

Healthy eating is essential to wellbeing, whether you have cancer or not. However, if your regular diet before being diagnosed contained cheeseburgers and fries, a healthy switch is needed. Even before treatment begins, healthy food will help to boost your immune system and better prepare you for chemotherapy or surgery.

Nutrition During Treatment

Chemotherapy is extremely unpleasant for most. Many people feel nauseous, vomit, or simply don't feel like eating when they should. Eating healthy and nutritious foods will help you to maintain energy despite feeling sick. For example, patients with mesothelioma may feel tired and unwell due to their treatment and disease. By eating healthy, patients fight cancer more easily than those who don’t.

Nutrition for Life

Beating cancer is cause for celebration! Don't fall of the healthy eating wagon, though. Healthy eating not only will continue to support your immune system while in remission, but also help you to achieve or maintain optimal body weight. Overweight and obese people are more likely to develop or redevelop cancer than those with healthy body weights. Therefore, by continuing to eat healthy after treatment, and adding regular exercise, you can decrease your chances of getting cancer again.
